1. Here begins the “Great Voyage” which Daegaya dreamed of 1,500 years ago

The 1,000km waterway of Daegaya – Unveiled from Goryeong of Gyeongbuk.

Daegaya, the Leading State of the Latter Gaya !
Goryeong of Gyeongsangbuk-do unveils the Great Voyage of Daegaya from April 9 to 12.

It is not a Grand Canal for large cruise ships, but it is the old waterway of Daegaya, through which Daegaya traded with Japan and China 1,500 years ago. This historical evidence of Daegaya’s advanced shipbuilding technology along the Nakdong River will be revived for the first time in 1,500 years.

Discover the truth about the Great Voyage of Daegaya at the Daegaya Voyage Area where you can build the ships used at that time; the Daegaya Cultural Tradition Area, where you can see the relics, crown ornaments, and earthenware that were exported to Japan and China; the Daegaya International Exchange Area, where you can learn about the splendid culture and history of Daegaya with the relics discovered in Goryeong; and the Daegaya Historical Reenactment Area (The Mystery of the Great Voyage of Daegaya), where you can witness the hardships and pirate attacks encountered by Daegaya during the Great Voyage along the Nakdong River.

And that’s not all. We also offer the Strawberry Harvest Experience, where visitors can visit a strawberry farm to pick, taste, and take home fresh strawberries as well as Traditional Cultural Experiences at Gaesil Village and Folk Cultural School, and the Ecological Learning and Insect Life Experience Programs at farm villages. There also are many other experience programs with the local people.

The following are descriptions of the experience programs offered in each area:

At the Daegaya Voyage Area, visitors can engage in the Daegaya Wooden Shipbuilding Experience, where they can make wooden ships used by Gaya to trade with Japan and China; the Sail Making Experience, where they can make sails for wooden ships; the Daegaya Voyage Experience, where they can compete against each other while sailing the wooden ships they make; the Rowing Experience, where they can sail the wooden ships; and Under the Sea Treasure Exploration, where they can try to catch Daegaya relics under the sea using fishing sticks.

At the Daegaya Cultural Tradition Area, visitors can immerse themselves in the Daegaya Golden Relic Making Experience, where they can use beads to reproduce the styles of Daegaya discovered in Japan; the Daegaya Crown Ornament Experience, where they can create feather, butterfly, grass, and onion ornaments for the golden crowns of Daegaya; and the Daegaya Patterned Earthenware Making Experience, where they can learn how to create wavy and needle patterns on clay.

At the Daegaya International Exchange Area, visitors can participate in the Glowing Shell Making Experience, where they can attempt to recreate the glowing shell ladle discovered at Jisan-dong Mound No. 44; Lotus Pattern Making Experience, where they can recreate the lotus patterns found on Goa-dong Tomb Murals and examine Daegaya’s relationship with Baekje and Buddhism; and at the Daegaya Flag Making Experience, where they can reproduce the flags that were erected as beacons along the trading route.

Performances include the Daegaya Voyage Road Show, with local specialties and cultural heritage performances; and the Historical Reenactment, a dramatic and modern reproduction of a fierce battle between trading vessels and pirates on the Nakdong River.

The Traditional Cultural Experience Programs include the Strawberry Harvest Experience, where visitors can visit the strawberry farm to pick, taste, and take home fresh strawberries; various cultural experiences at Gaesil Village, the hometown of the descendants of Sir Jong Jik Kim, and at the newly renovated Folk Cultural School; and Ecological Learning and Insect Life Experience Programs.

There are also various special events with the local people. In the clean areas of Deokgok of Goryeong, visitors can engage in the Egg Rice Experience, where they can mill and cook rice in egg shells on a briquette; the Auction Event, where they can purchase specialty Korean melons and mushrooms; and the Cooking Experience, where they can learn to cook with Seongsan Korean Melon, Dasan Lotus Roots, Ssangrim Strawberries, and Gaejin Potatoes.

The Daegaya Royal Tombs are open to public for the first time in the 30 years since they were discovered in the late 1970s. For the very first time, scenes from the excavation will be shared with visitors so they can travel back 1,500 years to witness the traditional lifestyles of the Gaya Royalty.

After making unforgettable memories, discover the great tastes of Goryeong.

If you need a stamina boost, we highly recommend the spicy catfish soup made with farm-cultured catfish. For healthy eating, we recommend Bamboo Rice – assorted grains steamed for an hour in bamboo and reed root infused water – and Bulgogi made with quality beef from Goryeong.Last but not least, there is the high-protein Rainbow Trout, which is prepared with fresh trout cultured in clear groundwater from the Anrimcheon River.

Although it was founded as a small state with a few tiny villages, Daegaya developed into the symbol of the Iron Culture in Korea. Daegaya reached its heights in the late 5th Century and existed for 520 years.

3. Make a family trip to Goryeong in April.

Planning your first family spring trip? It can be a headache deciding where to go and what to see. Do you want to see cherry blossoms? Local festivals? Mountains? Don’t worry; Goryeong has the answer for you.

At the Daegaya Festival in Goryeong, you can see the beautiful cherry blossoms and witness the history of Daegaya. Come to Goryeong of Gyeongsangbuk-do in April to learn about the history of Daegaya and see cherry blossoms, which usually reach their peak in mid-April. Since the beauties of Goryeong are not known to many people, you can enjoy a quiet and friendly trip. The 10km-long cherry blossom trail is about 10 minutes from Daegaya Festival by car.

We recommend that you visit the strawberry farm after seeing the cherry blossoms. Just pay a fixed fee for each adult, and you can pick, eat, and take home fresh strawberries. For the last 38 years, Goryeong’s strawberries have been grown with environmentally-friendly techniques and naturally pollinated with bees. Known for excellent color, sweetness, flavor, and richness in vitamin C, these strawberries are exported as premium products.
